Biography

Dr Surika Civilcharran is a lecturer in the Discipline of Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) and holds various positions in the School of Management, IT and Governance and the College of Law and Management Studies. These include serving as a discipline representative for the Teaching and Learning Committee in the School, a Module coordinator in the Discipline and a College representative for the procuring and training of proctoring software.

She joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2008 and shortly after commenced with her Masters degree in IS&T which upon graduation was recognised in the top 15% of UKZN’s achievers by the Golden Key International Honour Society. She graduated with her PhD in the same field in 2021.

Dr Civilcharran has been supervising postgraduate students since 2012 and secured the National Research Foundation (NRF) Thuthuka Funding (PhD Track) between 2018 and 2020. Her research focus is on digital intelligence and cloud computing among other IT-related topics. She has several publications in books, journals and conferences.

Dr Civilcharran has completed many reviews for journals including the IEEE Access, South African Journal of Information Management, Materials Today, the British Journal of Educational Technology and others. She also served as an external moderator for Pearson Education Group from 2015 to 2019.

Prior to joining UKZN, Dr Civilcharran worked in industry where she developed information systems for eThekwini Municipality.
