For Ms Vishika Ranjith, a Bachelor of Commerce graduate, earning her degree summa cum laude was more than an academic milestone – it was the culmination of a deeply personal journey marked by dedication, resilience, and growth.
Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, Ranjith pursued a qualification that uniquely blends information technology and human resources, equipping her with the tools to navigate a modern workplace shaped by both innovation and emotional intelligence.
‘The world is evolving rapidly with technological advancements, but there’s also a growing emphasis on human interaction,’ she said. ‘This qualification felt like the perfect way to bridge those two areas. It’s essential today not only to understand technology but also to manage and connect with people effectively.’
Although she was more drawn to the human side of her studies, Ranjith embraced the technical components, recognising the value of integrating both. ‘It’s a powerful combination,’ she said. ‘I now have a broader understanding of how technology shapes workplace interactions, which opens up diverse career opportunities. This qualification gives me a competitive edge in managing change in tech-driven environments.’
Her path to academic excellence required sacrifice. She shared how balancing demanding coursework with rest and personal relationships was challenging but ultimately rewarding. ‘Maintaining high marks meant giving up personal time and social activities – but it was absolutely worth it,’ she said.
Reflecting on her time at UKZN, Ranjith described her University experience as transformative, one that extended far beyond the classroom. ‘It’s been an incredible journey, not just academically, but personally. University life pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t expected, from navigating difficult modules to learning through mistakes and meaningful interactions. It helped me develop not only as a student but as a person.’
Outside her academic commitments, Ranjith is a creative soul who enjoys baking, painting and immersing herself in books. Her disciplined approach to life is clear: ‘Motivation doesn’t always strike on its own. I just keep moving forward, doing what needs to be done.’
She credits her family – particularly her supportive parents – as central to her success, standing by her every step of the way.
Looking ahead, Ranjith hopes to use her qualification to contribute meaningfully to a world of work where innovation is balanced with empathy.
