Mr Marlon Lazarus, an Academic Administrator in the College of Health Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), has achieved an outstanding academic milestone, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Management.

Lazarus expressed immense pride in his achievement, noting that his initial goal was personal development rather than academic excellence. ‘I didn’t anticipate achieving such high results, but this experience has reinforced that hard work and dedication truly pay off,’ he said.

Driven by a desire to progress in his career and provide a better future for his family, Lazarus chose to pursue a BCom Honours in Management to enhance his leadership and strategic skills.

‘I wanted to deepen my understanding of management principles and contribute more effectively to organisational success,’ he explained.

Balancing full-time employment and the responsibilities of raising two young children was one of the biggest challenges he faced. However, with careful time management and unwavering support from his wife, he was able to navigate the demands of work, family and academics successfully.

‘There were moments I felt like giving up, but my determination and commitment to my family’s future kept me going,’ he shared.

Reflecting on his experience at UKZN, Lazarus described it as incredibly rewarding.

‘The University fosters an environment of academic excellence, and the support from both academic and administrative staff has been invaluable,’ he noted, extending special gratitude to his supervisor for his mentorship.

Lazarus, who has been with UKZN since 2012, currently serves as an Academic Administrator. His professional journey, which began at the School of Nursing and Public Health before moving to the College of Humanities, has given him valuable experience. His future aspirations include advancing into a managerial role where he can contribute strategically to the University’s long-term goals.

Beyond academics and work, Lazarus enjoys outdoor activities such as camping and fishing. A devoted family man, he relishes spending time with his wife and two young children. When it comes to food, he has a fondness for slow-cooked meals over an open fire.

Reflecting on his journey, Lazarus hopes his story inspires others from similar backgrounds to pursue education and strive for excellence. ‘UKZN is the university of choice!’ he proudly affirmed.
